Restaurant Remodelling

THE WOODLANDS, TX

Project Challenge

OmniVueNDT was contracted to perform a critical subsurface assessment at a restaurant undergoing renovations. The primary objective was to accurately locate and mark post-tension cables and steel reinforcement within the ceiling slab to ensure safe anchor bolt installations.

A key challenge of this project was the limited space available for standard GPR equipment. To overcome this, OmniVueNDT utilized a high-frequency GSSI Palm Antenna, which is specifically designed for scanning in confined or obstructed areas.

GPR Scanning Methodology

During the initial site evaluation, it was evident that the ceiling surface was coated with fireproofing material, which posed two primary challenges:

  1. Surface irregularities - Traditional GPR carts require a smooth surface for optimal performance.

  2. Signal attentuation - Fireproofing materials often contain chemicals that weaken radar penetration.

To address this, the General Contractor’s (GC) crew partially removed the fireproofing in the scanning area (See Picture 1). Once the surface was prepped, OmniVueNDT conducted a thorough GPR scan of the ceiling slab. The results provided a detailed layout of reinforcement and post-tension cables, allowing for safe anchor bolt placement (See Picture 2).

Column Reinforcement Mapping

In addition to the ceiling scan, OmniVueNDT was tasked with identifying the rebar layout within structural columns. The GPR scan results revealed a uniform as-built reinforcement pattern, which was accurately marked on the column surfaces (See Pictures 3 and 4). This mapping enabled the GC’s crew to drill efficiently while avoiding structural steel.

Project Impact & Value

By integrating non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, OmniVueNDT helped the General Contractor reduce risks associated with drilling into structural reinforcement. This proactive approach provided multiple benefits, including:

  • Prevention of structural damage from unintended strikes on post-tension cables or rebar.

  • Increased safety for workers by minimizing drilling hazards.

  • Time and cost savings for the construction crew by eliminating uncertainties in drilling locations.

OmniVueNDT remains committed to supporting construction safety and efficency through advanced GPR scanning and subsurface engineering solutions.
