Storage Tank Deformation Analysis: What 3D Laser Scanning Reveals Before Failure

NDT

Circular storage tank shell condition assessment showing color-coded deformation analysis results.

Wind pressure, thermal cycling, foundation settlement and years of operational load all take a toll on a storage tank's shell, often long before any deformation is visible from the ground. Storage tank deformation analysis uses high-precision 3D LiDAR scanning to capture the true geometric condition of above-ground storage tanks, giving engineers and asset managers objective data to act on before a small deviation becomes a costly failure.

How It Works

3D laser scanning captures millions of spatial data points across a tank's exterior, building a highly accurate point cloud without physical contact or shutdown. Scans are registered together into a single 3D model representing the tank's full geometry. From there, the data is processed to evaluate verticality and plumbness, identify settlement patterns at the base, detect shell deformation or bulging, and assess roundness against engineering tolerances. Color-coded deviation maps highlight out-of-tolerance areas relative to a best-fit geometric model, making problem areas easy to identify at a glance.

Applications

Storage tank deformation analysis supports verticality checks, settlement monitoring, pre-maintenance evaluation and condition assessment prior to repair or retrofit, all without the downtime a physical survey often requires.

Deliverables

Following data collection, OmniVueNDT provides registered 3D point cloud models, deviation and deformation maps, cross-sectional analysis and quantified verticality measurements to support structural evaluation, maintenance planning and regulatory records, per API 653 Annex B. Pair this with our other NDT methods for a complete picture of tank integrity, including internal corrosion and material thickness.
